The audience are shown a deck of cards where all the card backs look different. Two cards are taken from the top of the deck (say the eights of diamonds andhearts ) and the audience are told that the eight of diamonds can always find the eight of hearts and vice versa. These two cards are placed randomly face up in the pack. The pack is then spread and the two face up cards are lifted out along with their adjacent cards. When turned over they are shown to be matched - in each case the eight of hearts with the eight of diamonds. Furthermore the two pairs are shown to have the same backs - unlike any others. The deck is then turned over to reveal that every other card is a black eight.
